In my first term, I was asked if I would be interested in teaching the "intro to studio" class in addition to my news-based classes. ABSOLUTELY!
And I am so happy I did. What a great way to kick off my time at Fresno State. This class set the bar HIGH. I threw an assortment of multi-cam production types their way, gave them the creative reins, and thoroughly enjoyed the outcome.
We started with interviews to give everyone an opportunity to not only get some hands-on production experience early in term with a 3 camera cross-shooting setup, basic audio and switching, but to also to understand what it is like to produce a 3-minute segment and sit under the lights with the cameras pointed your way.
I could tell who the characters would be right away and I knew we were in for a good semester!
After interviews, we did 30-second commercials, simple (and often silly) newscasts, talk shows, and finally "Choose Your Own Adventure." The students each pitched the project they wanted to do for the final. They then voted for their favorites. We choose four projects that term: Family Feud, Jeopardy, a murder mystery, and a newscast. They were fabulous.
I even had my own Jeopardy category!
It was a great way to start my full-time teaching career. I can't wait to see what spring semester has in store!
