While I was still working on my dissertation and directing newscasts at KGW, I started teaching broadcast journalism at Clackamas Community College (Who needs sleep? I had a husband and 2 young children, too!).
On the first day, the engineer said he would love to see a live broadcast. It took until my second quarter, but:
Challenge accepted!
5 students, 4 of them newbies to the broadcast world.
A software switcher that sort of worked.
One camera.
Two microphones.
Some lights.
VLC media player.
IPad Prompter.
A Teradek.
Some gaff tape. OK, a lot of gaff tape (seriously).
And one incredibly awesome engineer.
This is what it took to get our live news update off the ground. WAHOO!
We did a pretaped & edited version midterm and said “We’re doing it live!” for the final.
Rock on with your bad selves, student journalists! We’ll do it again in fall!
